Circular Economy Hotspot

12-14 Sep 2022

Bottrop, Germany

Circular Economy Hotspot

Since 2016, the Circular Economy Hotspot has been hosted as an annual summit, inviting world-renowned experts and delegates from business, politics, science and public initiatives of the trade of circular economy. During the event days at different locations, the top subjects will be circular economy, conservation of resources and efficiency enhancement.

Previously, the event took place in the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Scotland, Belgium and Spain. In 2022, the successful format will be hosted in Germany for the first time. From September 12 to 14, 2022, the Circular Economy Hotspot will be held in the former mining town and today’s InnovationCity Bottrop. Supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy and under the patronage of the Ms. Mona Neubaur, Secretary of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, it is organised by the City of Bottrop and the experts of Prosperkolleg, a research venture for Circular Economy.

In the heart of the Ruhr Area, pioneering approaches of the transformation from linear economic processes to circular economy will be presented. The Ruhr Area has a historical significance: for centuries, the mining industry and the extraction of coal and other fossil fuels built the driving force of the regional economy. The Prosper-Haniel mine in Bottrop was Germany’s last active coal mine and is still a characteristic sight of the region’s history. Today, Bottrop and the federate state of North Rhine-Westphalia aspire to become one of the greenest industrial regions in the world. This is possible because of circular industrial solutions connecting with the diversity of the industry and the research region North Rhine-Westphalia. They play a key role both during the transformation and within the Circular Economy Hotspot.

The event will highlight questions such as “What is the driving force behind the transformation process?”, “How can this process be financed and realised?” or “How can recyclable products and business models shape the industrial market?”. On the basis of practical examples, workshops and panel discussions, the above questions will be adressed. In this way, the transformation towards a circular economy can be accelerated and companies of regional and international scale are motivated to induce implementation.
