Setting up an organic urban waste-based biorefinery: key requirements

In Europe, cities generate around 90 million tonnes of bio-waste every year. More than half of that still ends up in the mixed waste that is landfilled or incinerated. The Circular Biocarbon project presents a first-of-a-kind flagship biorefinery that offers the opportunity to turn the organic waste generated in a city into new resources and end products. This first webinar, run through the project’s City Interest Group, will start with an introduction on the bioeconomy and on existing biorefineries.

Presentations from SOCAMEX and URBASER will outline the unique concept of the CIRCULAR BIOCARBON biorefinery, the two feedstocks i.e. the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) and Sewage Sludge (SS), before highlighting the major barriers and solutions to setting up a biorefinery of this kind.

The format will be interactive and participants will be invited to ask questions and share their experiences on the topic. The webinar is open to local authorities in Europe, and other relevant stakeholders, including but not limited to waste management or wastewater treatment authorities, waste management companies and researchers.
