CityLoops visits biowaste facilities in Seville

During its general assembly last June, the CityLoops consortium got an opportunity to visit the environmental room of Lipasam (Seville’s municipal cleaning company), and the wastewater treatment plant EDAR CORPERO EMASESA.

At Lipasam’s facilities, partcipants saw Seville’s new biowaste collection containers. Neighbourhood citizens and commercial establishments receive a special pass with which they can open these containers. The containers are also designed in such a way to make the collection of bio-waste more efficient.

Furthermore, LIPASAM highlighted its waste collection awareness raising campaign during this visit. The company believes that the campaign’s focus on schoolchildren will have a spillover effect, as they will be enthusiastically telling their parents what they’ve learned. The children also receive a waste bin, as well as garbage bags in three different colors for three different types of waste, together with a leaflet providing information about waste recycling. Additionally, at school, the children learn how to prepare food in a way that minimises waste as much as possible.

Following the visit of Lipasam, the CityLoops group went on to get a tour around the EDAR CORPERO EMASESA, the biggest wastewater treatment plant in Andalusia, to see how the plant recycles wastewater and sludge to produce biomethane. This process should increase the energy self-sufficiency of the wastewater plant.
